The colon is the lower part of your digestive tract known as the large intestine. It is the long tube like structure going from the small intestines to the rectum. It functions to pass waste products from the small intestine to be expelled from the body in the form of stool. People undergo colon surgery for various reasons. Some of the more common indications for colon surgery are colon masses or cancer, bowel obstructions, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Most bowel surgeries involve removal of a section of the bowel, this is known as a colectomy. Some bowel surgery requires cutting and reconnecting the bowel, while others may require an ostomy. These procedures maybe performed with an open technique or via a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) technique.
